On October 26, 2004, AT&T Wireless completed a merger with Cingular, a joint venture of SBC Communications and Bell South. When the dust settled, only the Cingular brand name remained. Because the Cingular brand appealed to a younger demographic and AT&T appealed to an older one, there has been a confusing convergence ever since, with many people still unsure what exactly happened. The bottom line is that AT&T merged with Cingular, and in sheer number of customers (approx. 63 million) remains the largest of the wireless carriers in the United States.
While AT&T Wireless may be the largest carrier in total number of customers, a closer look at the metrics reveals that it lags behind rival Verizon in such key areas as customer cancellation rates and a less than stellar customer service ranking.
AT&T Wireless operates on the GSM platform, providing "world capable" phones right out of the box, something its rival Verizon cannot lay claim to matching. A typical AT&T phone will function without modification in over 190 countries. They offer a large selection of GSM devices from such manufacturers as LG, Samsung, RIM, Motorola and others.
Although AT&T remains the largest US carrier in large part through acquisitions, it is worth noting that Verizon Wireless has gained tremendous ground by building its base without such acquisitions. The battle between AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless plays out daily in a multi-billion dollar advertising and marketing campaign for all to enjoy.
